DEPARTMENT OF NEUROPHYSIOTHERAPY

Neurophysiotherapy is a specialist branch of physiotherapy dedicated to improving the function of patients who have suffered physical impairment caused by neurological conditions. It is tailored to the specific needs of each individual with a personalized goal-oriented target. Physiotherapists are involved in treating individuals with such neurological impairments in order to maximize or enhance their functional ability. Neurological disorders affect the functioning of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Spinal Cord Injury and Parkinson’s are common neurological conditions. It also includes conditions of the peripheral nervous system such as  Guillain Barre Syndrome. Neurological conditions can have a devastating impact on the lives of the sufferers, along with family and friends. Disturbances in the travelling of messages between the brain and the body can result in the loss of movement, sensation, coordination, and balance. Other aspects of bodily function, such as perception, speech, memory, cognition, and behaviour may also be affected.

The face of neurorehabilitation has progressively changed in recent years. They include robotic-assisted training, virtual reality, functional electrostimulation, non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) to enhance the intensity and quality of neurorehabilitation, and to manipulate brain excitability and plasticity.
